Creativity was never an adjective I felt descriptive of myself. My mom was a Fine Artist and oil paintings were her expressive works. I think this is how I defined creativity as I admired her highly talented masterpieces. Fast-forward to the adult me of today, and what I’m slowly discovering about myself is that I am creative (albeit not by the medium of paints and brushes) and I have been creative my entire life. I declare (brace for this one) EVERYONE holds expressions of creativity in one realm if not many!

What I realized about myself is creativity shows up beyond the traditional sense…creativity can play out by way of mental problem solving and shifting lenses, verbal communication that supports all brave differences, listening to others and to self in a way that closes out judgment and tunnels in pure sincerity, showing gratitude well past the familiar words of ‘thank you’ to acts of thankfulness that are specific and detailed to a person being seen/honored. Creativity may surpass an artist’s palette of elements and encompass aesthetics of planting a garden, photography, movement/dance, cooking, songwriting, making up a group game, organizing space, mapping a hike’s route, collaborating on work/ sports teams. It’s the formula that comprises openness, freeform, resourcefulness and risk-taking. Playful expressions and extensions of you that combines pride, individual style and personal skill. Anything that in its foundation is molded by your unique fingerprint by way of reshaping is creativity in your finest. The more time spent in the space of personal wonderment, curiosity and exploration through trial-and error the more we become awakened to our own eye-pleasing-design that conveys our personalized signature.

Children are extraordinary at being creative because their flow for imagination is not just streaming but is flooding as they are naturally uninhibited to a desired outcome or expectation and fully embody the moment. Being Creative is permission to be uncontrolled from perfection, to be adventurous for invention and to expand past your own invisible boundaries.

I recently learned a new word, Meraki, from the Greek meaning: To do something with soul, creativity and love, and in so doing so leaving a piece of yourself into what you are doing.
